Jess Franco Count Dracula movie review
With their 2023 UHD Severin Films deliver the finest presentation of Jess Franco's troubled adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic, known in Germany as Nachts, wenn Dracula erwacht.
Count Dracula is a highly uneven, somewhat dated film. Filled to the brim with crude zooms and mismatched shots, the film was hard to see in decent form. Severin's UHD really helps bring out the nicer aspects of Manuel Merino's cinematography.
As far as vampire movies go, Count Dracula is an acquired taste. Individual pieces stubbornly refuse to gel into any sort of complete whole, leaving the viewer feeling both frustrated and fascinated.
Bruno Nicolai's score is excellent, though as are some of the locations.

    I actually really liked the movie. The only off putting thing for meme ware German Shepards. And the ending is kinda rushed. But it was a pleasure to watch, actors are charming, feels a bit theatre piece alike.

      I know plenty of people who really like this movie. At first glance, Count Dracula has everything to be one of the most successful Jess Franco films. The elements are all there and I do revisit this movie once in a while to see if it grows on me. This time around I watched the beautifully restored version released by Severin, which certainly looks amazing. But somehow It's one of those films that, beyond some scenes, just doesn't come to life as a whole.

  • @thecollectordude9956
    @thecollectordude9956 3 дня назад

    I think the film showed a lot of promise in the first 20 minutes. All of the scenes where Christopher Lee has lines are really good. Unfortunately there are too many players in my opinion and there is too much conversation about how they're going to stop Dracula. Also even though Klaus kinski is an amazing actor, his scenes have little to no impact on the story. I think Jess is better at writing his own tales instead of adapting others. I feel like this was his attempt at making a typical Hammer movie instead of something of his unique style.

    • @AL_TFA

      It's a movie of extremes. Some characters go on and on, whereas Renfield is pretty silent. There are both enjoayably eerie and fairly awkward elements in almost every scene.

  • @pinkrudy

    The difference from blu-ray to 4k is minor in many cases. Almost not worth it most of the time. The big difference titles i can count on 1 hand. However, I still buy some of them because 4k discs hold more data which means it holds more language tracks. for people who want to learn foreign languages 4k discs are a very welcome addition.

    😅 I wonder what the current stance is now that more and more elder classic movies are released on UHD. They absolutely look more analog film like than what was put on dvd and bluray (not to mention colour graded like the cinema version which the dvd and bluray version often weren't)

    • @desinho9
      @desinho9 16 дней назад

      But you were right that it would have been great if this was already the direct successor to dvd. Personally it's why I largely skipped the blu-ray era (also because the very first releases on BR looked so artificial). So for me most of my UHD buys are upgrades from dvd versions rather than bluray

    Thanks for another great review. I have to say I liked this one from the first viewing. At first it looks like just another exploitation film, and to a certain extent it is, but at its core it's a tragedy about a young woman's loss of innocence and her eventual downfall. I wish Montserrat Prous had done more films for Franco; I daresay I find her much more appealing than Lina Romay. In this film she has a haunting beauty that reminds me of Soledad Miranda in Vampyros Lesbos or She Killed in Ecstasy.

    • @AL_TFA
      @AL_TFA 3 месяца назад

      Some even claim meeting Lina Romay marked the starting point of Franco's artistic decline, while to others she quite literally embodies his brand of sensual cinema

  • @markboreen3359
    @markboreen3359 3 месяца назад

    Thanks for a nice review. This is definitely a strange one that has really grown on me over the years. I first saw an English dub of it 10-12 years ago and thought it was laughably bad (in my defense, I was new to Franco at the time). I later saw it in French with English subs and it really changed my opinion of it, enough so that I bought the Redemption blu-ray with the Tim Lucas audio commentary, and now it's a favorite.

    • @AL_TFA
      @AL_TFA 3 месяца назад

      Hey markboreen3359, thanks for watching. It's a favorite of mine, too. Minimalist and inspired. The English dub is cringeworthy (someone did an equally poor job dubbing Franco's Sadomania into English for its Anchor Bay DVD release )

    • @markboreen3359
      @markboreen3359 3 месяца назад

      @@AL_TFA Yes, I have that Sadomania English dub and it's pretty dire. Not sure if it's the Anchor Bay release; I found it on the web somewhere. I watch a lot of Italian and Spanish films from the 70s and 80s, and it seems like the Italians invariably did a better job on the dubbing back then.

    • @AL_TFA
      @AL_TFA 3 месяца назад

      the issue with that Sadomania dub is that it was made in the 2000s specially for the US DVD premiere as they either lost the original English sound elements or they never existed to begin with (since it was a German/Spanish co-production). So the voices understandably don't match the period.

    1. All women in his movies seems to be either prositutes/dancers or filthy rich countesses. 2. Men are weak and clumsy because men (in Jess view) are indeed weak and clumsy. 3. Beautiful women have powers over any other human being just like witches/spellbinders. 4. If you don't have a scripted dialog yet, just film actors walking next to each other from a distance, we'll overdub what they are saying later on. 5. Lovers have sex by rubbing one's bodies against each other until the cinematographer loses focus. I just love Jess Franco. He has great movies, he has bad movies, he has weird movies, and it's all his own kindom.

      It sure is a problematic film on many levels. There's no psychology to its characters, no suspence, no family values, no jokes, no happy end. It's set in this hermetic world of Rollin's personal obsessions. Definitely not for casual viewers. But it can still be inspirational to select audiences. And the nighttime fotography is stunning a lot of the times.

    It boggles my mind how Blue Underground has not upgraded this from DVD (yet). Not only is it classic early 70's Franco but also one of the few that has Soladad Miranda! THAT alone should have expedited the release. Instead they keep putting out various editions of the same 99 Women, Justine, and Eugenie '70. 🥱 not that there's anything wrong with those films but I prefer Eugenie '73. If Blue Underground isn't interested in upgrading I'm sure Severin or Mondo Macabro would jump on it. Severin has been doing great with their Franco releases. OK, rant over, haha.
